Ever since KARE opened its doors to its flagship store in Munich, it has attracted visitors becoming a proverbial tourist destination in its own right. In essence still a furniture store, KARE Kraftwerk however has managed to also become a unique architectural as well as art space. Housed in a former 60s power house, the facility has become a design destination complete with a boulevard of furnishing ideas as well as a stylish restaurant on its premises and a host for various art installations.
The latest KARE Kraftwerk collaboration with the arts features photographs of Mayk Azzato as part of the store’s 'Insights' photographic exhibition. Launched in late February, the permanent exhibition features prominent figures photographed by Azzato include Bill Clinton, Kevin Kostner, Snoop Dogg, Vitali Klitschko and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
For his subjects the internationally sought-after photo artist always creates a distinctive individual world, placing stars from the worlds of film, music, sports and politics in an adventurous and exciting setting in front of the camera. KARE Kraftwerk is also working hand-in-hand with the in-demand fashion photographer and photo artist by exhibiting not only portraits but also large-scale cityscapes and a video installation on the subject of motion.
“I wanted an out-of-the-ordinary location and immediately decided in favour of KARE Kraftwerk when I had a major fashion shoot here recently”, says Azzato. Explaining the choice of location he adds: “I like things which tell a story. For me the industrial architecture of KARE Kraftwerk is fascinating – with its traces of the past, the height of the rooms, the views and the unique combination with unconventional furniture. This is what creates Kraftwerk's special ambience”.
Azzato has rose to fame in recent years due to the photographer’s trademark style that manages to capture the distinctive individual world of his subjects by placing stars in an adventurous and exciting setting in front of the camera. For fans of Azzato the ‘Insights’ exhibition also offers the opportunity for collectors to purchase unique original works by the photo artist. KARE owners and managing partners Jürgen Reiter and Peter Schönhofen regard this event as confirmation of their policy of combining the theme of furnishing design with culture and art.
Mayk Azzato’s ‘Insights’ exhibition is permanently housed at KARE Kraftwerk, Drygalski-Allee 25, 81477 München, Germany. kare-kraftwerk.com.
