  • When: 13-15 April
  • Where: Various parts of Thailand

Celebrated since ancient times, Songkran is an important religious and cultural festival that marks the beginning of a new year for the Thai people. Traditionally, celebrations involved the pouring of water on the young and elderly to wash away sins and bad luck. While this is still practised, the festival has taken on a fun twist: full-blown water fights, where everyone, including unsuspecting tourists walking down the streets, become fair game to an arsenal of water guns, hoses and buckets. Those seeking a more tranquil experience can join the throng of devotees at the temples for prayers or offer food to monks to earn merits in accordance with Buddhist belief.

  • When: 2-8 April
  • Where: Bali Purnati, Bali, Indonesia

The annual Bali Spirit Festival is back, bringing together people from all walks of life who share a passion for yoga, dance, music and culture. This year’s theme is ‘Return to Source’, and sees day-time activities such as meditation, traditional Balinese performances and sound healing sessions conducted in a lush tropical setting of manicured gardens and cool shady trees. There will also be yoga classes for all levels, including beginners and children, as well as seminars on health, nutrition and personal development. Come sundown, enjoy the Bhakti music performances in an open-air venue under the stars. The festival supports several outreach initiatives to give back to the local community, by working together with international yoga teachers and musicians to raise funds for charity.

  • When: 12 April - 20 May

Immerse yourself in all things French at the 17th Le French Festival, touted as the largest French event in Malaysia. Culture enthusiasts can look forward to the latest French films, concerts, live shows, food offerings and more. Some of the exciting highlights this year include the screening of Amok, a French theatre adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s novel set in Malaysia in the beginning of the 20th century, as well as performances by rock-power trio Lysistrata, an award-winning band and a regular at some of France’s biggest festivals.
